Rubiales sacked Spain manager Julen Lopetegui two days before their 2018 World Cup campaign in Russia because the coach had a pre-agreement to join Real Madrid after the tournament. There was further controversy last year when members of the Spanish women's team mutinied against their coach Jorge Vilda. The RFEF backed Vilda who then cut 12 of the 15 players involved from the squad that went on to win the World Cup. Rubiales' actions on World Cup final day, and later defiance, have brought a torrent of public criticism in Spain and elsewhere, but also a backlash in some circles against feminism.

A priest at the church, who identified himself as Father Antonio, told reporters that Béjar had been taken to the hospital on Wednesday. He said her son, Rubiales, had spoken with his mother before she was taken to the hospital. “Her son [Luis Rubiales] called her yes, he has called her and they have been in touch. And among all of them [the family] they decided she needed to go to hospital,” Father Antonio said. CNN Portugal reported from the church earlier this week and spoke to the friend of Rubiales’ mother, who described the backlash against Rubiales as “an injustice”.

Holly Thomas Holly ThomasThe spotlight is on Ángeles Béjar, the mother of Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales. Rubiales gave Jennifer Hermoso of Spain an unwanted kiss during the medal ceremony of the FIFA Women's World Cup on August 20, 2023. Where I grew up in southern England, women’s soccer was a (usually homophobic) punchline. For comparison, tickets to an equivalent men’s game would’ve set us back closer to $1,000. Men’s football may be becoming more inclusive and the players less loutish, but there’s no doubt which sport is the main event.

MADRID, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Spanish regional soccer chiefs demanded federation boss Luis Rubiales resign for grabbing and kissing World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso, as the country's caretaker government promised on Tuesday to ensure women play a bigger role in running sports. Many of the federation representatives had initially applauded Rubiales when he announced on Friday he would not quit. "Following recent events and the unacceptable behaviour that has seriously damaged Spanish football's image, the (regional) presidents demand that Luis Rubiales immediately resign," they said in a statement. Gender issues were a prominent political issue in Spain before Rubiales' kiss. Hermoso, her teammates and the Spanish government say the kiss was unwanted and demeaning.

The pressure is on for Luis Rubiales, the president of Spain’s national soccer federation, to quit. In an emergency meeting that went on late into Monday night, Spain’s regional soccer chiefs unanimously asked him to step down immediately. And in Madrid on Monday night, hundreds of people took to the streets, waving red cards and demanding Mr. Rubiales’s resignation. Mr. Rubiales, a former professional soccer player, had hoped to play a match with friends on Saturday evening at the town’s municipal stadium. Feminist groups threatened to protest outside the gates, and the town council ordered it canceled, saying it could not guarantee Mr. Rubiales’s safety.

CNN —The Spanish government has taken further steps toward suspending beleaguered soccer chief Luis Rubiales after submitting all necessary documentation to the country’s Court of Arbitration of Sport (TAD). The development comes as pressure continues to mount on Rubiales ever since he gave an unwanted kiss to soccer star Jennifer Hermoso after Spain won the World Cup final on August 20. A government statement released on Tuesday said that Rubiales displayed “unacceptable behavior” at the Women’s World Cup final and called his actions “very serious” violations of the country’s Law of Sport. On Monday, all 19 regional presidents called for Rubiales to resign while also offering unanimous support for Rocha, who stepped into the role following Rubiales’ suspension by FIFA. Along with mounting public pressure to resign, Rubiales also faces an investigation that could end in sexual aggression charges from Spanish prosecutors.

President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales announces he will be staying as president during the meeting, August 25, 2023..Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation of the nation's soccer federation chief, officials said Monday, in connection to his kiss on the lips of a player shortly after winning the World Cup. The national prosecutors also invited the player, Spain's team captain Jennifer Hermoso, to reach out to them in the next 15 days to report herself as a possible victim of sexual aggression by federation president Luis Rubiales, officials said. Béjar took refuge in the church of the Divina Pastora de Motril on the southern Spanish coast and defended her son. The sport's international governing body, FIFA, on Saturday suspended Rubiales from all soccer activities for 90 days. The kiss has marred what had been joyous national celebration of La Roja's first time lifting the Women's World Cup trophy.

Angeles Bejar said her strike would last "until a solution is found to the inhumane and bloody hunt they are carrying out against my son with something he does not deserve", according to EFE. According to EFE, Bejar stayed inside the parish church of Divina Pastora in Rubiales' hometown in southern Spain, Motril, with her sister after the parish priest left. She asked Hermoso to tell the truth and "stick to the version she gave at the beginning", EFE added. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has issued a statement for him, saying Rubiales "will defend himself legally in the competent bodies" to prove "his complete innocence". Hermoso said she did not consent to the kiss and felt "vulnerable and the victim of an aggression".

CNN —Spanish prosecutors have opened an investigation that could end in sexual aggression charges against the country’s soccer federation boss Luis Rubiales. The case centers on the unwanted kiss Rubiales gave to star player Jenni Hermoso as Spain won the Women’s World Cup on August 20, according to a Monday statement from the Spanish Prosecutors Office. The soccer boss and the RFEF have been embroiled in controversy ever since he kissed 33-year-old attacker Hermoso on the lips after Spain won its first Women’s World Cup title with victory against England. In response to Rubiales’ decision to stay, RFEF vice president Rafael del Amo and 11 members of the Spanish national women’s soccer program have resigned. Hermoso and her World Cup teammates said that they would not play again for Spain until Rubiales has been removed from his position.

An experienced mountaineer spent 500 days in a cave alone as part of a study in Spain. In a social media post just days before entering the cave, Flamini wrote to followers they would see each other again in April or May of 2023. The elite mountaineer spent eight days alone in a tent while the problem was resolved, before returning back underground, per the Associated Press. Despite calling the experience "unbeatable" and "excellent," the experienced athlete did have one complaint: a one-time fly invasion. When the experience had finished, Flamini didn't even realize what was happening when her teammates came to retrieve her.
